General Bornemann started his military service in the German Armed Forces in 1968. He studied
Economics and Politics at the University of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg. Following
attendance of the General Staff Officer Course at the German Armed Forces College in Hamburg
(1983-1985) and the Royal Belgian Defence College in Brussels (1987-1988) he served in several
command and staff functions in the German Bundeswehr. At the level of the German Ministry of
Defence in Bonn/Berlin he acted as Military Assistant to the State Secretary for Military Policy, as
Branch Chief Military Policy and International Military Cooperation and Deputy Head of the Military
Policy Division. At the level of NATO-Headquarters in Brussels he was appointed as Assistant
Director Plans and Policy IMS, as German Military Representative to NATO and EU and finally as
the Director General IMS. He retired from military service in July 2013.
General Bornemann lives in Berlin and works as an independent advisor for security and military
policy.
